Statistics speak for themselves<\/h2><\/div>

The best seasons to set out on the Cammino Materano <\/span>are undoubtedly <\/span>spring and autumn<\/b><\/span>, and looking at the statistics that are published every year we immediately have confirmation<\/a> of this: <\/span>the months of April and May<\/b><\/span> are at the top of the list of departures, followed by September and October and, further apart, December and August.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

Avoid the hottest months<\/h2><\/div>

The reasons are obviously related to the <\/span>weather-climatic conditions<\/b><\/span>: the summer temperature is likely to be too high to enjoy the walk, and can become a serious obstacle especially since there are <\/span>few points at which to refuel with water<\/a><\/b><\/span> and some of the stages, which I discuss in the report, are mostly without any shelter from the sun. This means that almost every morning you will also have to put all the water you will need during the day on your shoulders.<\/span><\/p>\n

The early part of spring will also offer you the spectacle of flowering and wheat fields ready for harvest; on the trees you will also find waiting for you a good number of ripening cherries from which you can draw from time to time.<\/p>\n

I have no direct experience of this, but there is no doubt that color-wise autumn also reserves equally spectacular colors and atmospheres for wayfarers, and certainly the temperatures return favorably from mid-September onward.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Cammino Materano in winter: a good choice<\/h2><\/div>

After walking the first two paths (the\u00a0Peuceta<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Ellenica<\/span><\/a>) in full spring, I chose to walk the Via Lucana in winter<\/strong> during the Christmas holidays, right around New Year’s.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

It proved to be the right choice from every point of view: weather-wise, I was lucky because I never had rain. Obviously, you need to be properly equipped and ready to deal with the season’s temperatures, but the walking days under the sun were often even more pleasant than in the warm season; moreover, there’s no need to start walking at dawn to avoid the scorching heat. On the contrary, to make the most of the sun, I preferred to start the stages leisurely<\/strong>, between 8 and 10 depending on the day, and I made the most of the winter sun’s warmth, ending the stages well before sunset anyway.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

On more than one occasion, especially in the valley bottoms where there’s less wind, I walked wearing only a long-sleeved technical t-shirt.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

I add that visiting Matera at Christmas is a great experience, with the markets and the famous living nativity scene<\/strong>, which I recommend dedicating at least half a day to.<\/p>\n<\/div>
